Home office is sooo hot. I mean is the hotness of hot. Just like the heat in a room is a function of the temperature of the walls and floor and ceiling, it is also a function of the thermal resistance of the materials in which the room is filled. Is the temperature of your home at all different from the temperature of the air in the room? As a matter of fact, the temperature in the room is about the same as the temperature of the air.
A typical home in California, where I live, is a warm temperature because that is where the sun was last week. The temperature of the floor in front of my door is about the same as the temperature of the air. The temperature of the ceiling does not matter because the air only rises or falls through the floor.
So, the temperature of the home office is the same as the temperature of the air. However, home office is filled with many more people than just one person. Those who work in the home office have to deal with the various environmental factors and many of these things cannot be managed at home. So, you know, the heat in the home office is higher than the temperature of the air, not just the temperature of the floor, the ceiling, and the walls, but it is also higher than the temperature of the air.
I mean, a hot home office is not just hot in the sense that it is a warm temperature. It is hot mentally. It is hot because you have a bunch of colleagues and friends around you and the temperature of the air is not an issue.
You know, when I was living in a flat, the temperature at the bottom of a room was always the same. The temperature at the top of a room was always the same because it was too dark and too cold in the middle of the room for the temperature to change much. There was no heat from the bottom of the room to the air that I could feel and so I had to use a heater to make it warm in the bottom of the room. I had to open the door for ventilation and use the fan.
And then one day I noticed that my bathroom floor was also warm. You could feel it. When I raised the temperature of the bathroom floor, it went up higher than the heat in the bathroom. The temperature difference went up too. And that also felt hot.
That is why I said that a warm home office is more than just hot. It is actually a warm mental space.
You know, I had a colleague who was very excited about computer programming when he was young. He used to take his programming books to work in his bedroom and read them at his desk. Then he got a laptop when he was in school, so he started programming at his bedroom desk while sitting in his bedroom with a laptop. From there he transferred his programming books to a computer program. And, now, he has his own small company and he makes money. This is a story like that of many programmers.
I think many of us have too many desks and computers for our own space. We do not have much space in our home. It is very difficult to use our home office as a place where everyone can work. And you know, this is a problem. Some people cannot even do their work at home. They get too tired at home.
For myself, I am one of those people. I used to take all the stuff in my desk to my bedroom and work it out there. Then, when it got too hot in the bedroom, I used the fan to cool the room. When I went into the bedroom there, I could see the fan. So, I knew that my bedroom was too warm. And then I looked at my desk. It was also hot. Even more than my bedroom.
For me personally, there are a lot of issues that I cannot do my work at home. I need to work outside in order to improve my abilities at home and, more importantly, for me to feel that I am doing the best work of my life.
I cannot do that and I cannot do it when I am with my wife or with my kids around me. I cannot do that. I cannot take care of myself properly. If I cannot do it when I am at home, why should I do it when I am working in the office? There must be a way for me to be efficient at work. I must find a way in which I can do my work and feel that I am doing my best work.
At my age, I know how to use the most appropriate tools. For me, the office is a place for serious work and, at the same time, I need to be available to my family all the time.
